Lovely, Dark and Deep Review

Lovely Dark and Deep
By: Amy McNamara

A resonant debut novel about retreating from the world after losing everything—and the connections that force you to rejoin it.

Since the night of the crash, Wren Wells has been running away. Though she lived through the accident that killed her boyfriend Patrick, the girl she used to be didn’t survive. Instead of heading off to college as planned, Wren retreats to her father’s studio in the far-north woods of Maine. Somewhere she can be alone.

Then she meets Cal Owen. Dealing with his own troubles, Cal’s hiding out too. When the chemistry between them threatens to pull Wren from her hard-won isolation, Wren has to choose: risk opening her broken heart to the world again, or join the ghosts who haunt her.

This just happened to find its way on to my shelf because of the beautiful cover. Come on. Look at it. I didn't even really know what it was about when I bought it but I'm sure glad I did. It was a real roller-coaster of a ride filled with intense emotion and heart break with an ending that will leave you begging for more.

When faced with dark times, Wren ships herself off to live with her dad in the middle of no where, to get away from everything. She is trying to run from her pain, literally, but far be it around the corner may be her knight in shining armor. It may seem like a fairy tale love story but it really isn't. It is more about the deep struggles of life and what one person has to do to find her self above it.

Cal on the other hand it so wrapped up in his own pity that he can't see the choices he has in front of him. He knows what he wants but the fight to get it is one that he thinks he can't win. While we read the story from Wrens POV it is Cal story that makes the story so well rounded. How could these two people find happiness in each other. You question it but some how they do. It is for this simple reason that I love this book so much. It is extremely well written. It did win the 2013 International Reading Association Young Adult Book award so that's a lot to be said.

If you are looking for a love story, you will get it in this book. But what you don't expect to get is an eye opener. A realization that with great love comes terrible heart break. You will ride an emotional roller-coaster with the characters as they fight to try and right themselves, to bring themselves back to normal. It's this fight for normalcy that will having you relating and cheering Wren and Cal on. Along with all the other supporting friends in their lives. Just a truly amazing read that I hope everyone will get a chance to pick and indulge.

There is only one thing that had me a little upset about this novel. I don't believe there is a sequel. The ending is just a little too vague for my liking. I want more. I need to know Cal will be okay. I need to know that Wren will be okay. The author leaves it to your imagination to finish their story off but to tell you the truth I just didn't want it to end. Give me more please!!!

A wonderful book that makes you think about life and leaves you thankful for everything that you have. This is not a light read so be prepared to have your heart strings tugged at and your mind riffled through because this book will make you think, love and live for every moment we get. Just amazing!!!
